Parma industry growth depends on environmental concerns like applications such as water treatment, flue gas treatment and hazardous waste remediation Boyce Activated carbon, or charcoal, is used in pharmaceutical industry primarily as an adsorbent to water treatment, flue gas treatment and hazardous waste remediation on drug manufacturing process.

Boyce activated carbon is used in Filters to waste water purification for different applications like BOD, removal of color, smell, odour and turbidity. Comprising of pressure vessels, these could be either vertical/ horizontal-fitted with frontal pipe work and valves. Our activated carbon is also well supported by layers on the bed and under drain system to collect filtered water.

About Boyce

Boyce Carbon is a leading exporter of activated carbon from south East Asia. Boyce supplies activated carbon to leading solvent recovery companies, petroleum refinery units and waste water management and pharmaceutical companies in the Middle East, Europe and USA Boyce activated carbon is made out of virgin coconut shell processed through steam based activation and can be shipped on the same day based on the customer requirement.
Why Boyce

For this purpose the use of the Boyce carbon is cheaper in comparison to other forms of the fuel such as gas or electricity. Boyce carbon is used for Distilleries. It is used for the heating purpose. In the manufacture of the liquor, Boyce carbon is used for the purpose of heating the boilers for the separation of the product. It is economical to use the Boyce carbon when it is compared with other forms of the fuel. Activated carbon suppliers in India gives more scope for application of the activated carbon in a wider area, such as removal of pesticides, treatment of drinking water, treatment of industrial process water and waste water etc. Therefore the Boyce activated carbon are in much demand in the global market.

Activated carbon is effective at removing natural organic matter and colour, oil emulsions, taste and odour forming compounds and algal toxins during water purification. The use of organoclay for oil removal was characterized as an emerging water treatment technology as early as 1994. This technology can be equipped on a trailer to act as a mobile treatment system. Installing an adsorber vessel with organoclay and an additional vessel with granular activated carbon, an effective mobile treatment system could be established.

Oil contaminants in water. Oil and grease are commonly found in many process waters and groundwater. The major components of oils found in contaminated groundwater are benzene, toluene, xylene, naphthalene, benzoanthracene, benzopyrene, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), trichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, methyl tertiary butyl ether, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and phenols. Organoclays effectively remove chlorinated phenols and other hydrophobic, sparingly chlorinated, soluble compounds, e.g., PAHs and PCBs (Mortland et al, 1986). In combination with activated carbon, organoclays also provide cost-effective removal of BTEX; the organoclay removes the compounds with lower solubility, i.e., xylene and toluene, leaving the carbon able to remove benzene exclusively.

Well, first of all one should know what activated carbon actually is. It is an eco friendly water treatment medium, which is found in granulated, block, or powdered form, produced by heating carbonaceous materials, such as coal, wood, or coconut shells, in the absence of air, creating a highly porous adsorbent material. Mostly coconut shells are used for this process.

Coming to why activated carbon from India. It is a well known fact that India is the largest producer and exporter of coconut and coconut based products in the world. India is also the 3rd largest producer of coal. Here in India, there are 12 major ports and 135 minor ports which are so well connected by a road system that it makes it very easy for transportation.

The Government of India considers the exports of coconut shell products so important that they have a department dedicated to promote export of coconut shell products. Indian companies, a minimum of at least 100 manufacturers make activated carbon from coal and coconut shell as per specifications of the customer, exporting around 25000 tons of activated carbon and importing 1000 tons of activated carbon every year. India also has an excellent relationship with countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia and The Philippines etc, who are also major coconut producing countries.

Coming to the global scenario here, the demand for activated carbon is around 0.50 million tones per annum with a global growth rate of 2 to 3% per annum. The wood based activated carbon accounts for about 40% of the total production in the world. Cost advantages can be obtained for both coconut shell and coal-based activated carbon.

Why Boyce Carbon?

Boyce Carbon, a company doing business in Southeast Asia exporting activated carbon and coconut shell charcoal.

Have a pristine network of sourcing to countries like India, Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam etc.

Technical staff who can offer hands-on guidance in selecting the most appropriate system, operating conditions and carbon to meet your needs.

The incineration of wastes such as municipal waste(MSW),hazardous industrial waste, medical waste and sewerage sludge results in the formation of a flue gas containing a range of pollutants. Methods such as scrubbing, bag filters and electrostatic precipitators (ESP) are used to remove most of these pollutants. However these methods cannot remove dioxins and heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium

Activated carbon injection has been identified as the best available control technology (BACT) for the removal of above said range of pollutants. There are a variety of ways to use activated carbon in flue gas treatment. The best application method depends on the existing pollution abatement system.

Boyce standard range of powder activated carbon (PAC) proved to be an efficient solution for this purposeshttp://www.carbonsuppliers.com

Dry Abatement System

Dry powdered activated carbon (PAC) is injected into cooled (<200oC) flue gas. The carbon can be injected in numerous locations, including prior to or after acid gas scrubbing. The overall design is similar to the semi wet/semi-dry abatement equipment except the PAC is injected dry. The used PAC will be collected in the particulate matter (PM) collection device and safely disposed of with the ash. Typically, the usage of activated carbon ranges from 50 to 500 mg per Nm3 of flue gas. Carbon usage rate is highly dependent on the flue gas temperature, available contact time, and the particulate matter collection device.

Semi Dry/Semi Wet Abatement System

Process of Fuel with Boyce

Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is injected (dry or as a slurry) into the humidified 130 to 160oC flue gas stream. Although the contact time in the gas stream is usually less than a second, the contact time is substantially increased by the residence time of the carbon in the particulate matter (PM) removal equipment. The PAC can typically be disposed of as non-hazardous with the other ash. PAC can be added alone or in conjunction with lime used for acid gas treatment. When mixed with lime, some of the PAC or PAC/lime can be re-circulated. Carbon usage rates range from 50 to 500 mg per Nm3.

Wet Scrubber Abatement System

For over 20 years, activated carbon has been used to remove mercury and dioxins from water. In a wet scrubber system, granular (GAC) or powdered (PAC) activated carbon is used to remove dioxins from the scrubber liquid. Powdered carbon is added to the re-circulating liquid, and a small slipstream of solution is continuously purged. Alternatively, the re-circulation scrubber solution is continuously pumped through a GAC bed and purified. When the GAC is saturated and no longer performs as required, the spent carbon must be disposed of in an environmentally safe method.

Powdered activated carbons supplied by Boyce, have been consistently meeting emission discharge standards of 0.5 µg/Nm3 mercury and 0.01 ng/Nm3 T. E .dioxins throughout Europe. In the United States, proposed incinerator facilities and existing incinerator facilities face stringent flue gas discharge requirements. Many facilities are currently using Boyce standard range of powdered carbons for mercury, dioxin, and VOC control. Some local governments and state environmental agencies have already established flue gas treatment objectives prior to upcoming federal regulations.

For flue gas treatment, removal of trace levels of mercury and dioxin is required. To accomplish the adsorption of these micro-pollutants, the adsorbent must have sufficient high energy adsorption sites. Boyce coconut-based powdered activated carbons have a high minimum Iodine Number (measurement of available surface area) with up to twice the amount of high energy adsorption sites when compared to other adsorbent carbons. With proper dosing levels, over 95 percent reduction in mercury/dioxin is achievable.

Waste water from the textile finishing industry commonly contains moderate concentrations (10-200 mg/l) of dye stuffs, contributing significantly to the pollution of aquatic ecosystems. Various physio-chemical and biological techniques can be employed to remove dyes from waste water. The technical and economic feasibility of each technique is determined by several factors such as dye type, waste water composition, operation costs and generated waste products.

The adsorption technique is superior to other techniques with regard to simplicity of design, initial cost, ease of operation and insensitivity to toxic substances. This technique uses activated carbon and other suitable sorbents. Activated carbon remains the most effective and widely used adsorbent for the decolourisation of waste water from textile industries.

Process of recycling in textile industry using biological activated carbon treatment system

In this bio treatment method, naturally occurring micro organism breakdown materials in the water such as Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), turbidity, Total Suspended Solid and nutrient levels and thus improve water quality. The Activated carbon filters are used to provide a place on which these microorganisms grow. Because of the low price of bio treatment, the combination with AC may reduce the overall treatment cost. Finally the biologically activated carbon systems degrade the industrial waste water in a fast and inexpensive way.

There are 2 types of biologically activated carbon systems for waste water treatment in textile industries. In the first type, biological activated carbon (BAC) filter uses granular activated carbon to reduce dissolved organic matter and remove color (20 to 30 mg/L ozone for 0.5 to 1 hour). While in the second, biological activated carbon filter (BAC) uses activated carbon in the form of flexible clothes to reduce dissolved organic matter (20 to 30 mg/L ozone for 0.5 to 1 hour).

The two biological activated carbon treatment systems successfully reduce the levels of BOD5,COD, DOC, TSS, Color and Turbidity in the wastewater to within the specified guidelines in each trial, that is continuously providing high quality recycled water to the entire factory requirements . The improvement of water quality by the two BAC filters under different conditions is tabulated below (Table 1.). Biological oxidation within GAC filters also can be efficient for the removal of inorganic such as ammonia. Ammonia is a toxic chemical which promotes bio-growth and reacts with chlorine. The combined removal of DOC and ammonia leads to a significant reduction of the chlorine demand of the finished water. The amount of DOC removal and oxygen consumption by the two BAC in warm temperature (25-34 oC) are much greater than cold temperature (9-17 oC.)

Water used for steam generation in power plants and some other processes requires high quality standards. When used, steam/condensate becomes contaminated by oil, hydrocarbons and other organic compounds from lubrication machinery drives and leaking seals. The condensate is usually returned to boilers for steam generation. If not removed, impurities and oils can increase scaling in the boiler reducing thermal efficiency, plug valves and foul ion exchange resins in condensate polishers.

Condensate recycle systems require an activated carbon with very low silica, magnesium, and calcium leaching characteristics. High pressure boilers are sensitive to silica (SiO2) as it volatilizes with the steam and then deposits on turbine blades. Hardness, calcium and magnesium ions deposit in boilers as carbonates. Boyce Activated carbon has been developed to meet these demanding requirements.

Boyce Activated carbon is a high purity granular activated carbon designed for the purification and decolourisation of aqueous and organic liquids where low ash and low leachables content are required. Boyce Activated carbon is particularly suited to the treatment of steam condensate for recovery.

Boyce Activated carbon is an acid washed high purity high activity granular activated carbon manufactured by steam activation from carefully selected coconut shell charcoal. This grade is particularly suited for ultra-pure water treatment systems requiring low conductivity and exceptionally high purity. This material is also specifically recommended for the removal of heavy hydrocarbons from condensates. The acid washing process removes soluble silica (SiO2) from the matrix of the activated carbon to prevent leaching into the condensate.

When used for the removal of hydrocarbons from condensate, Boyce Activated Carbon is characterized by a large adsorptive capacity for oil (approximately 30 weight percent), and levels of silica release into condensate that are much lower than that typical for standard coconut carbons.

Boyce Activated Carbon offers distinct advantages over such coal based pellets by being denser, harder and lower in ash. As Boyce Activated Carbon possesses a 20 percent greater density than coal, based palletized products an absorber loaded with Boyce Activated Carbon will exhibit a greater hydrocarbon capacity overall as it contains 20 percent more carbon. The high hardness of the Boyce Activated Carbon results significantly less attrition of the carbon in the absorber and lower release of fine carbon particles into the condensate during absorber operation.

However, most importantly in respect of condensate treatment applications, the higher purity of the Boyce Activated Carbon `(less than 25 percent of the ash content of the acid washed coal pellet) means that the product offers much less silica leach into condensate significantly reducing back wash requirements and reducing the risk of potential boiler or turbine problems. Coal based carbons produce significantly greater silica leach than coconut based carbon products as their ash composition contains large alumino-silicate content and even after acid washing this can only be reduced to approximately 3 percent residual ash.

Plant operational experience has confirmed that Boyce Activated Carbon requires significantly less backwashing than the acid washed coal based pellet products to achieve required silica release levels. Boyce Activated Carbon required 100 bed volumes of backwashing to achieve SiO2 of less than 0.1 mg/L at 80° C whereas an acid washed 0.8 mm coal based product required approximately 1,000 bed volumes.

The benefits of condensate treatment and recovery with Boyce Acid Washed Activated carbon include:

Lower water treatment costs as less make up water is required with the condensate recovery.

Lower waste water treatment cost as condensate is recovered rather than going to waste.

Lower energy cost as hot condensate is recovered and higher thermal efficiencies in the boiler.

Often referred to as charcoal filters, an activated carbon air filter is the most effective filter for removing the smell from cigarette smoke, chemicals, gases and many other odors from household air. These filters are available often as an option when you purchase media air filters. These activated carbon filter pads are installed with your regular filter pads and usually last for two media filter changes.

How Activated Carbon Air Filters Work

Activated carbon is actually charcoal that has been put through a process that causes millions of pores to form. This increases the surface area of the carbon immensely and creates a very large surface area where gases and particles are trapped. These pores form between the carbon atoms which results in a material that bonds very well with various contaminants.

Natural Fresh Air without Chemicals or Sprays

Installing a carbon air filter in your furnace or air conditioning system is very effective at removing pet, smoke, garbage and mold odor. This reduces the need for unnatural solutions to odor problems and there is no need for chemicals or sprays which can cause allergic reactions.

Carbon filters are often used as pre filters for heating, air conditioning, ventilation and air cleaning equipment. The media part of the air filter removes the dust and the carbon pre filter removes the undesirable smells that can often be very overwhelming.

Carbon air filters are also available in panel filters and can be used as the only filter in the HVAC system but are not as efficient as some of your other options. Carbon pre filters are not recommended for use with hepa air filters because hepa filters already have a negative impact on air flow.

Our special manufacturing techniques results in highly porous charcoals that have surface areas of 300-2,000 square meters per gram. Boyce Activated charcoal are good at trapping other carbon-based impurities (“organic” chemicals), as well as things like chlorine. Hence thus makes very suitable to incorporate in all kinds of Activated carbon Filters.

Variety of Activated Carbon Air Filters Where Boyce Activated Carbon is Used
Activated Carbon Pleated Panel Filters - remove particulates, gases and odors.

Chemically Enhanced Carbon Pleated Panel Filters - remove particulates, gases, odors, fumes, acid gases, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC´s).

HEGA (High Efficiency Gas Adsorption) Filters - use activated carbon as a major component to remove a wide range of gases and odors in air purification applications.

Carbon Loaded Rigid-Box Filters - remove odors with high efficiency in low concentration applications.

High Mass Zero Dust (HMZD) Panels - are suitable for applications in airports, museums, semiconductor manufacturing, waste water treatment plants and others where carbon dust cannot be tolerated.

Refillable Carbon Trays - offer a reduction in replacement cost allowing just the carbon media to be changed out, saving the cost of the filter frame.

Carbon V-Bank Filters - offer low-pressure drop, high airflow capacity and excellent gaseous contaminant removal and are ideal for either new or retrofit applications. The entire filter is disposable and the media can be selected based on the specific properties of the contaminants of concern.

Military Carbon Cloth Media - is available in many air purifiers including the Austin Air Allergy Machine. The close weave on the cloth media allows for the trapping of many of the allergy causing contaminants and odor producing elements often passed through by granular carbon Medias.
